Looking up for joy

Today’s practice is a small meditation in being present. Our brains are wired in such a way to make the regular seem comfortable and safe, so we have a tendency to walk the same way, do the same thing, think the same thoughts.

If we want to change how much joy we experience then we need to begin the process of re-wiring how we think. One of the ways I do this is by remembering to sometimes look up instead of down.

I notice the tops of the buildings I pass, the architectural quirks, the birds in a line on a window sill, the colour of the sky, and shapes of the clouds. There’s a whole world above us. A world that is just as beautiful as the one at our feet.

This is a simple mindful practice that I suggest trying to incorporate into your life on a regular basis. Think about other patterns or habits you have that you can disrupt as well. Each time you try things a different way is an adventure in itself.
